We recently completed a massive rehabilitation project at Martin State Airport in Middle River, MD. This was a substantial upgrade to the airport runway and associated infrastructure. This project was completed in an extremely tight time frame of approximately 6-7 months and involved large areas of concrete and asphalt demolition, significant electrical upgrades, a new concrete Taxiway A/T, and re-profiling the runway with appx 35,000 tons of base asphalt and appx 50,000 tons of surface asphalt. Other work included erosion and sediment controls, temporary and permanent striping, grading, stone placement, and runway grooving.
The most remarkable part of this project was a 21-day full shutdown of the runway taking place in the month of July for Flanigan crews to complete the P-401 surface asphalt placement. A significant achievement, battling constant rain outs, and crews mostly working at night to avoid the brutal day time summer temperatures. This effort took many paving, milling, and detail crews, as well as escorts for dozens of dump trucks hauling from our asphalt plants to complete under this stringent timeline. A major accomplishment with a lot of overtime and sleepless nights for management to get this work done and the runway reopened for air traffic by the required deadline!
