After 12 months of downtown street reconstruction, the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix Race took place on September 2nd through the 4th. P. Flanigan & Sons was chosen by Baltimore City to perform this work. The project consisted of resurfacing approximately one mile of asphalt roadway, and one mile of concrete roadway. The roadwork was well received by drivers and spectators with cars exceeding 180 mph on Pratt St. This work on downtown main arteries will last for decades and will perform as well for buses, cars, and bicyclists as it does for race cars. Downtown pedestrians will also benefit from the construction of ninety ADA compliant wheel chair ramps that P. Flanigan & Sons constructed during this project.

P. Flanigan & Sons also performed major tasks for the Baltimore Grand Prix. We built a series of temporary ”chicanes” to guide the race cars through the course. These chicanes were constructed using curb mix produced at our nearby Westport Asphalt plant.

P. Flanigan & Sons also constructed a temporary track crossing at the Camden Yards light rail station. Our crews completed the paving work over the course of one night. The asphalt performed exceptionally well over the course of three days of hard racing. We then removed the paving in time for Light Rail service to recommence the day after the race. The tracks were perfectly preserved and no signs of the asphalt were left on the crossing.

Liquid asphalt arrives in Baltimore by truck, train and cargo ship. The picture below is of one of the largest liquid asphalt cargo ships in the world.

Flanigan recycles 100% of the asphalt from its projects. Asphalt is the most recycled product in the United States. By recycling as much as possible, we ensure the sustainability of our business practices.

P. Flanigan & Sons completed a project for Cirque du Soleil America, Inc. on April 7, 2011. Located on Baltimore’s Westport Waterfront, the project site consisted of two separate lots that total approximately 30 acres of land. The accelerated schedule and rainy spring weather required careful planning and extended work hours during this month-long project.

The project was comprised of site preparation for the Grand Chapiteau, or Big Top, as well as parking for over 680 vehicles. More than 41,000 tons of aggregate base was placed on the lot with graders and dozers. The top four inches was placed with an asphalt paver and compacted with a roller.

Hot Mix Asphalt was placed in the Handicap and VIP parking area, as well as underneath of the Big Top.

Cirque du Soleil’s “Totem” show is expected to draw approximately 70,000 attendees during the April 7 through May 1 performance schedule. The Flanigan team worked closely with Cirque du Soleil to ensure the project was completed in time for the show.

Flanigan is the latest recipient of the Sheldon G. Hayes Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association for the work on our project on I-97 between Baltimore and Annapolis. Since this is a national award, we are proud and pleased to be recognized in this way. The Sheldon G. Hayes Award winner is determined through a two-year process. Highway pavement projects using more than 50,000 tons of Hot Mix Asphalt are eligible for consideration.

Initially, they must win a Quality in Construction (QIC) Award, which is determined by numerical scores given by pavement engineers at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) based on how well the contractor met the specifications and achieved density on the finished pavement. All the pavements that meet a benchmark figure are given the QIC award. The year after a project wins a QIC Award, it may be considered for the Sheldon G. Hayes Award. The top-ranked projects from each year are tested for smoothness, and then visually inspected by an independent pavement consultant with many years of experience in the industry. The award was presented to us at the Annual NAPA Convention in Phoenix in January 2008.
