PEARL Partner Appreciation AwardTuesday, July 22nd, 2014
P. Flanigan & Sons has been partnering with PEARL since 2009 on their project to repopulate the Chesapeake Bay with oysters. Oysters need something solid to attach themselves to in order to grow. Due to over-fishing, and an increase in sediment in the bay, the Oysters do not have enough “stuff” to attach themselves to. Creating reefs for the oysters to grown on was a challenge we were approached with by Mark Bundy at Morgan State.
The best material to use is old oyster shells, but gravel and other stones also work. In 2009, P. Flanigan donated 100 tons of recycled concrete to PEARL for testing. Their extensive research showed that the recycled materials did not adversely affect water quality. With the success of the tests using our recycled product as a bedding material, PEARL received approval from SHA to test it in the Chesapeake Bay.
P. Flanigan & Sons hopes to continue partnering with Morgan State University, and PEARL, on this project.
